Freak observers and the measure of the multiverse

چکیده
I suggest that the factor pj in the pocket-based measure of the multiverse, Pj = pjfj, should be interpreted as accounting for equilibrium de Sitter vacuum fluctuations, while the selection factor fj accounts for the number of observers that were formed due to non-equilibrium processes resulting from such fluctuations. I show that this formulation does not suffer from the problem of freak observers (also known as Boltzmann brains).

متن کاملPredictions from Star Formation in the Multiverse
We compute trivariate probability distributions in the landscape, scanning simultaneously over the cosmological constant, the primordial density contrast, and spatial curvature. We consider two different measures for regulating the divergences of eternal inflation, and three different models for observers. In one model, observers are assumed to arise in proportion to the entropy produced by sta...
متن کاملA paradox in the global description of the multiverse
We use an argument by Page to exhibit a paradox in the global description of the multiverse: the overwhelming majority of observers arise from quantum fluctuations and not by conventional evolution. Unless we are extremely atypical, this contradicts observation. The paradox does not arise in the local description of the multiverse, but similar arguments yield interesting constraints on the maxi...
متن کامل0 A ug 2 00 7 Typicality , Freak Observers and the Anthropic Principle of Existence
We propose an alternative anthropic probability for calculating the probabilities in eternal inflation. This anthropic probability follows naturally from the weak anthropic principle, and does not suffer the freak observer or the typicality problems. The problem that our observed cosmological constant is not at the peak of the usual anthropic probability distribution is also solved using this p...
متن کاملThe Subjective Computable Universe
Nearly all theories developed for our world are computational. The fundamental theories in physics can be used to emulate on a computer ever more aspects of our universe. This and the ubiquity of computers and virtual realities has increased the acceptance of the computational paradigm. A computable theory of everything seems to have come within reach. Given the historic progression of theories...
